What is AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein)?

Measures alpha-fetoprotein, a tumor marker for liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and testicular cancer. Also used in prenatal screening for neural tube defects.

Why is this test important?

AFP is the primary screening marker for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic hepatitis B/C or cirrhosis. Recommended every 6 months in high-risk patients.
