What is Alpha Iduronidase Hurler / MPS I?

This blood test measures the activity of the alpha-L-iduronidase enzyme, which is vital for breaking down complex sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). A deficiency can lead to their harmful accumulation in the body.

Why is this test important?

Reduced alpha-L-iduronidase activity is characteristic of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I (MPS I), including Hurler syndrome. This genetic disorder causes GAGs to build up in cells, leading to progressive damage to organs, bones, and the nervous system.
