What is Male Infertility?

Male infertility is a common reproductive health issue affecting millions of men worldwide. It is typically related to problems with sperm production, sperm function, or sperm delivery. Causes range from hormonal imbalances and varicocele to lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, and heat exposure. In the UAE, lifestyle-related factors including vitamin D deficiency, sedentary habits, and high ambient temperatures may contribute to declining sperm quality. A comprehensive evaluation including semen analysis and hormone testing is essential for accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Symptoms

  • ●Inability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse
  • ●Low sex drive or erectile dysfunction
  • ●Pain or swelling in the testicular area
  • ●Decreased facial or body hair
  • ●Recurrent respiratory infections
  • ●Abnormal breast growth (gynecomastia)

What Causes Male Infertility?

Male infertility can result from hormonal disorders affecting testosterone and sperm production, structural abnormalities like varicocele, genetic conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome, or infections that damage reproductive tissues. Environmental and lifestyle factors including smoking, alcohol, obesity, and exposure to toxins also impair fertility.

Risk Factors

  • ⚠Obesity and sedentary lifestyle
  • ⚠Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • ⚠History of undescended testicles
  • ⚠Exposure to high temperatures or toxins
  • ⚠Advanced age (over 40)
  • ⚠Vitamin D deficiency

How to Prevent Male Infertility

Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, managing stress, and limiting testicular heat exposure can protect fertility. Regular health check-ups and early treatment of infections or hormonal issues are important.

When to Get Tested

Test if you and your partner have been unable to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse, or if you have known risk factors such as previous testicular injury or hormonal symptoms.
