What is Total Triiodothyronine (TOTAL T3)?

The Total Triiodothyronine (T3) test measures the total amount of T3 hormone in your blood, another key hormone produced by the thyroid gland. T3 is more potent than T4 and significantly impacts your body's metabolic rate and energy regulation.

Why is this test important?

This test is often used alongside T4 to diagnose hyperthyroidism or to assess the severity of an overactive thyroid. It can also help detect T3 toxicosis, a form of hyperthyroidism where T3 levels are elevated but T4 levels are normal.
