What is PROINSULIN, SERUM?

The Proinsulin, Serum test measures the amount of proinsulin, a precursor to insulin, in your blood. Normally, proinsulin is converted into insulin, but elevated levels can indicate issues with insulin production or processing, or insulin resistance.

Why is this test important?

This test is useful in evaluating pancreatic beta-cell function, assessing insulin resistance, and sometimes in diagnosing certain types of pancreatic tumors (insulinomas). It provides insights beyond standard insulin measurements.

How to Prepare

Fasting for 8-12 hours is typically required before this test.
