What is Macroprolactin?

This test measures the level of macroprolactin in your blood, which is a larger, less active form of the hormone prolactin. High levels of macroprolactin can sometimes cause a standard prolactin test to appear elevated, even if your active prolactin levels are normal. It helps differentiate between true hyperprolactinemia and a benign condition.

Why is this test important?

Clinically, distinguishing macroprolactinemia from true hyperprolactinemia is vital to avoid unnecessary investigations and treatments. Elevated macroprolactin often doesn't cause symptoms and doesn't require medical intervention, whereas true hyperprolactinemia can indicate underlying conditions like pituitary tumors or thyroid dysfunction.
