What is Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and 2) IgM?

This test detects IgM antibodies for both Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in your blood. IgM antibodies are typically produced early in a new or recent infection with either HSV-1 or HSV-2.

Why is this test important?

An elevated HSV-1 and 2 IgM level suggests a recent or active infection with either HSV-1 or HSV-2. This test is important for diagnosing acute herpes infections, especially when symptoms like sores or blisters are present.
