What is Group B streptococcus PCR?

The Group B Streptococcus (GBS) PCR test detects the genetic material of GBS bacteria in a urine sample. This test is highly sensitive and provides a rapid and accurate way to identify the presence of GBS, which can be important for pregnant women and newborns.

Why is this test important?

GBS can cause serious infections in newborns if transmitted during birth. This PCR test is crucial for screening pregnant women to identify carriers and allow for preventive antibiotic treatment, significantly reducing the risk of GBS disease in infants.
