What is ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)?

Measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube. An elevated ESR indicates inflammation in the body, which can be caused by infections, autoimmune diseases, or cancer.

Why is this test important?

ESR is a non-specific marker of inflammation. It is useful for monitoring inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and temporal arteritis. Serial measurements help track disease activity.
