What is Epstein-Barr Virus Early Antigen IgM (EBV EA IgM)?

This test identifies IgM antibodies against the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Early Antigen. The presence of these antibodies is a strong indicator of a very recent or acute EBV infection, as they are typically produced early in the course of the disease.

Why is this test important?

EBV EA IgM is a key marker for diagnosing acute primary EBV infection, such as infectious mononucleosis. Its detection helps confirm a current infection, especially when other EBV markers might be inconclusive, providing crucial information for diagnosis and patient management.
