What is Calcitonin, Serum?

Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland that helps regulate calcium levels in the blood. This test measures the amount of calcitonin in your serum to assess thyroid function and related conditions.

Why is this test important?

Elevated calcitonin levels can be a marker for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a rare type of thyroid cancer. It's also used to monitor the effectiveness of MTC treatment and detect recurrence after surgery.
