What is Alpha Feto Protein (AFP, Prenatal Screening)?

This blood test measures Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) levels as part of routine prenatal screening during pregnancy. It helps assess the risk of certain birth defects and chromosomal abnormalities in the developing fetus.

Why is this test important?

Abnormal AFP levels in maternal blood can indicate an increased risk for conditions like open neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida) or Down syndrome. Further diagnostic tests may be recommended based on the results.
