What is ACTH; ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE?

This blood test measures the level of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) in your blood, which is produced by the pituitary gland. ACTH plays a vital role in controlling the production of cortisol, a stress hormone, by your adrenal glands.

Why is this test important?

Measuring ACTH levels helps diagnose conditions related to cortisol imbalance, such as Cushing's syndrome (too much cortisol) or Addison's disease (too little cortisol). It also helps determine if the problem originates in the pituitary or adrenal glands.

How to Prepare

Fasting for 8-12 hours is usually required. Your doctor may also advise you to have the blood sample taken in the morning, as ACTH levels vary throughout the day.
