What is 24 Hrs Urinary Catecholamines?
This test measures the levels of catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) and their metabolites in your urine over 24 hours. These hormones are produced by the adrenal glands and nerve cells, playing a role in stress response.
Why is this test important?
It is primarily used to screen for and monitor rare tumors of the adrenal gland or nervous system, such as pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma, which can produce excessive amounts of these hormones.
How to Prepare
You will need to collect all urine passed over a 24-hour period in a special container. Start by emptying your bladder and discarding that urine, then collect all subsequent urine for the next 24 hours, including the first urine the following morning. Keep the container refrigerated during collection. Your doctor may advise avoiding certain foods (like coffee, tea, bananas, chocolate) and medications before the test.
