Metabolic Syndrome
المتلازمة الأيضية
What is Metabolic Syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when a person has at least three of five risk factors: large waist circumference, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose. The UAE has one of the highest prevalence rates of metabolic syndrome in the world, estimated at 30-40% of the adult population, driven by rapid urbanization, dietary changes, and reduced physical activity. The condition is a major risk multiplier — having metabolic syndrome doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes five-fold. Regular metabolic screening with blood tests is essential for early identification and intervention.
Symptoms
- ●Increased waist circumference
- ●High blood pressure
- ●Elevated fasting blood sugar
- ●High triglyceride levels
- ●Low HDL cholesterol
- ●Fatigue and low energy
What Causes Metabolic Syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is primarily driven by insulin resistance, where the body's cells do not respond effectively to insulin. Central obesity and physical inactivity are the main contributing factors. Genetic predisposition, chronic stress, and poor dietary patterns high in refined carbohydrates and saturated fats compound the risk.
Risk Factors
- ⚠Central (abdominal) obesity
- ⚠Sedentary lifestyle
- ⚠Diet high in processed foods and sugars
- ⚠Family history of diabetes or heart disease
- ⚠Age over 40 years
- ⚠Polycystic ovary syndrome in women
How to Prevent Metabolic Syndrome
Regular physical activity of at least 150 minutes per week and a balanced diet emphasizing whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins are the cornerstone of prevention. Maintaining a healthy waist circumference and managing stress significantly reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
When to Get Tested
Test if you have a large waist circumference, high blood pressure, or a family history of diabetes and heart disease. All adults over 40 in the UAE should have metabolic screening annually.
Recommended Tests
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
C-Peptide
Insulin (Fasting)
Liver Function Test (LFT)
Kidney Function Test (KFT/RFT)
High-Sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP)
Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Panel)
